The voyage plan
Karizma, in her berth at Blairgowrie, just before departure. Camera date/time stamp is exactly one year out and should read "2007" instead of "2006".
Our departure time, as usual, was dictated by the tide, in particular the tide at The Rip, the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. For this first leg our aim was to cross Bass Strait in a single hop, heading straight for Three Hummock Island, near the NW tip of Tasmania, where we would rendezvous with the crews of other craft at a beach barbecue on the evening of Wednesday 01Mar07.
As I recall, we motored all the way, as we had a head wind which was whipping up waves which, all night, we drove against while steadily making our way south.
Three Hummock Island
With this successful crossing now behind us, we proceeded early on Thursday 02Mar07, in the company of other vessels, southward toward our first major port of refuge, Macquarie Harbour, reaching that early on the morning of Friday 03Mar07.
Early morning, Thursday, 02Mar07, on the NW corner of Hunter Island.
Late afternoon, same day, heading south along the rugged and treacherous west coast of Tasmania, in perfect weather.
